Haircut Day!

First Haircut
We decided that 18 months would be a good age for Asher to get his first proper haircut. I say “proper” because the truth is, I’ve trimmed his bangs so he could see twice. But this was the big haircut. The one where you save the hair in a little Ziploc (my, I use these a lot!) baggie for who knows what purpose.

So, last Saturday morning after breakfast, we all four ventured outside into the shady part of the lawn with Lucas’s fancy Stokke seat, since it doesn’t have a high back. We strapped Asher in, continuously handed him toys and other objects of interest, and I started cutting. We enlisted Lucas’s help and told him to run around the yard and do funny things to keep Asher entertained. Ian was in charge of the camera.

A few “Before” shots.

So long! Everybody thinks he’s a girl with this long hair.

Red glasses are distracting!

I was feeling pretty pleased with myself. I mean, I didn’t poke his eye out with my scissors!

All done!

Lucas’s Turn
We planned to give Lucas a trim next. Usually, he fights and doesn’t want a haircut. Usually, he says he wants his hair long like a rockstar’s, long so it can fly behind him when he runs.
This time, he surprised us by saying he wanted his hair cut short like his little brother’s. “Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
“Are you really, REALLY sure?” (I was nervous that he would hate the short cut and blame me for the next two months.)
“Yes.”

He liked playing with the spray bottle.

actually gave Lucas two haircuts—a trim, and then a cut, when he persisted that he wanted it really short. “Short like Asher’s!” It was kind of nerve-racking. He was amazingly patient.

Ta da! Lucas has gotten lots of compliments on the shorter hair (especially from grandparents), and says it’s so much cooler now ! Many people have said it makes him look older, like a first-grader. So fortunately, he seems to really like it. Thank goodness! What a relief!

brava! They went from babies to boys- well I guess Asher did, and Lucas went from little boy to big boy. Amazing what a haircut can do. They look great! Nice job!

    Thanks!
Did I switch? Usually I post photos here and on Flickr. I just don’t usually manage to do it on the same day.

Thank you! I have always cut Lucas’s hair, except once or twice. For the last several years, though, he has wanted it long, so I’ve only given trims. I felt scared and out of practice. Also, I was scared that Asher’s straight hair would show all the flaws of my amateur barbering skills. But, I think they both turned out OK.

Thank you. Really, I’ve got a penny-pinching streak. Who wants to pay for regular haircuts for two boys! Not me. I want to save all those pennies for my salon cuts!

Ha! That last picture of you and Asher totally made me laugh. The boys look great! And your hands look so deft and gentle.
