Magical Rainbow Pony

Knitted Magical Rainbow Pony

My mama, who knits (generously and prolifically) very practical and beautiful things like sweaters, socks, baby blankets, and scarves, asked me, “So, what’s with all the knitted animals?” My answer is, “Because they’re small and cute and fast, and I can justify making them because I have kids (even though my kids don’t play with them). Moreover, I’m practicing simple/basic knitting skills like increasing and decreasing, following a pattern, and counting. Prerequisite skills for knitting anything that might be worn by someone.

In the case of this pony, the pattern (from Toymaking with Children by Freya Jaffke) was just slightly different from the donkey I knitted in June, so I was curious about that. I had the rainbow wool yarn from a felting project I did a couple of years ago. So, why not? Haven’t you always wanted a rainbow pony? I have!

I love you rainbow horse! As I too love to knit and crochet things to play with rather than items to actually wear…! Although, last winter I did finish two snow hats, and I made baby shoes once, but they seemed too small for the child…bummer.

My mom still looks at me in wonder, as she knitted our sweaters and mended our clothing. And like you, I justify by having children (they are almost 12 and 10 LOL).

I have to look up this pattern, as it puts a smile on my face! Rainbow pony’s are magical aren’t they? (As are Freya Jafke’s books)

    Love,
    Heidi

Thanks, Maureen! It was fun to make; I’m sure you could do it. I guess deep down I’m still a 9-year-old girl who loves rainbows and ponies and unicorns. Actually, I considered trying to fashion a horn for this pony to transform him into a unicorn, but my knitted horn didn’t look right. 🙂

Thank you, Heidi. I appreciate your stopping by! I think the pony would have been cute if it were knitted in brown or white or black, but there’s something compelling and delightful about rainbow yarn!

Sara ~ love this, you did a wonderful job. I think my girls would love rainbow ponies for their play, and I have the book right here in my room. What size needles did you end up using? I love to make the crocheted Crown Headbands on page 31 of that book. They play with them so much!

Hi Leslie. Thanks for visiting and for the lovely compliment. I used US size 4 needles. I don’t know how to crochet, but it’s on my list of things to learn! Good luck with your ponies!
