Birthday Planning

We are now into the season of birthday planning, for Lucas’s seventh birthday is one month from today. He seems to have settled on a theme. (What’s wrong with birthday as a theme, some of you may ask. Well, to Lucas a party equals a chance to wear costumes. He is our kid, after all.) The theme this year is …

Aliens & Robots
Defenders of the Universe!

As far as I can tell, Lucas is completely unaware of that new animated movie "Monsters versus Aliens," or whatever it’s called. That’s good, cuz we’re not having a movie birthday party.

We are gathering supplies and decorations, goodies for goodie bags, and planning the food. What would Aliens want to eat, do you think? We are saving all sorts of boxes and egg cartons to make a giant silver robot. We are planning games and entertainment.

We are also ironing out the invitation list. I’ve discovered that one of the few opportunities a small boy has to exercise absolute power is the invitation list for his birthday party. With regularity, the names on the list change, depending on who is on the outs with Lucas. He’s got about one more week to fluxuate, then the invitations go out!

The easy answer on alien and monster food is to make normal food scary, of course. Food colour is good for that.

I also remember eating watermelon wrapped in foil – as an alien egg, of course – at my own alien themed birthday party. Er, when I was a kid. Yes. Of course.

A quick watch of Monsters, Inc. on YouTube will likely generate food ideas too. I have one photo from Disneyland that may help too:

As you know, I’m always happy to have an excuse to dress up in costume, so I can appreciate Lucas’ cool idea here!
Let me know if you would like to borrow our Venture Bros. “Helper Robot” for the party. 🙂

This sounds like a fantastic party. I might have to do this for my next birthday too.

I love the alien egg idea. That’s awesome. Lucas wants punch with dry ice and gummy worms in it. Oh yeah.

But, he doesn’t want stuff to be too scary; he prefers cute. He ended up choosing a ladybug cake pan for the cake, which we will decorate in colors to look not at all like a ladybug and more like a cute little alien.

I’m with Ms. Nono, I want to throw this party for my own day of birth.

Aliens want to eat humans, just like zombies do, but that will very likely send the wrong message. I mean, depending on what kind of parent you are…

I love this party idea! I’m with everybody else– I want an alien and robot party for MY birthday!

It seems like alien food would be a lot like creepy halloween food. Things that are slimy and things that wiggle and good stuff like that. Blue food coloring is going to be your friend, I think. 🙂

According to Futurama, robots need plenty of beer to function. I suppose that doesn’t help much with seven-year-olds…
