Lucas’s Baptism

Lucas’s Baptism took place at 3:00 p.m. on March 29, 2003, at Point Reyes National Seashore, Limantour beach

After Delphinia, but before closing the ceremony, at the water’s edge we said:

“May all the gods and goddesses of the earth
And all the gods and goddesses of the sky
And all the gods and goddesses of the air
And all the gods and goddesses of the sea
Bless our son, Lucas Alexander.
Make him grow strong and smart, healthy and happy, courageous and compassionate.
This we pray.”

We poured a handful of sea water on his forehead and hair. We dipped his feet in the retreating wave.

Lucas smiled and squinted in the bright sunlight, and kicked his legs, splashing in the ebbing wave. It was beautiful and my heart was full of gratitude to be surrounded by the glorious sea and sky and earth, and by so many treasured friends.
