Home Sweet Home

Things around here are normal. We had a nice, family-oriented weekend, which was a good contrast to the last couple of weekends filled with busyness. Ian’s currently sick with the cold Lucas had last week, so I’m probably going to come down with it any day now. (We are all so friendly and generous with our germs!) Ian bravely suffered through it and got a little more rest than normal, appart from the schoolwork he did.

On Saturday, Lucas and I went to a pirate-themed birthday party for a boy (Devin—you might remember his name from one of my previous LJ posts) in Lucas’s class. He dove right into the birthday fray with great gusto, which surprised me a little bit. He had expressed some trepidation about attending a pirate party, but he adores the birthday boy. Lucas gamely donned the proffered pirate sash, eye patch, and bandana with enthusiasm and dug for buried treasure with the rest of the pint-sized guests. He then spent the next five hours saying “Aaargh!” and “Ahoy, matey!”—even later that day while we made sugar cookies. (I amazed myself by embarking on this project; I guess it was a fit of holiday and domestic cheer!)

Anyway, Lucas is thrilled that he got to eat black marzipan cannonballs from the pirate ship birthday cake—which, by the way, was freakin’ amazing and complete with canons and sails! It was good to see him playing so well with a small group of children outside of school. We have been so busy lately, we haven’t had many play dates. Lucas is less enthusiastic about the cookies (ghosts, cats, pumpkins, and autumn leaves) than the cannonballs he ate, but I like them and they were super fun to make.

On Sunday we all finally went to the local pumpkin farm (alas, not the one that I’ve been going to since I was a child. The family that owned Farmer Bob’s must have sold the property). Anyway, there Lucas bounced in the bouncy house, slid down the many slides, rode on the trolley/train ride, and chose some pumpkins. And I got the annual family pumpkin farm pictures that I adore so much.

We carved our four pumpkins into jack-‘o-lanterns last night (see later post for picture). For the first time ever, Lucas requested scary jack-‘o-lanterns. We are delighted to listen to Lucas sing the jack-‘o-lantern song he learned at school, and tonight we were lucky enough to get it on videotape. There’s also a song about “whisky-friskies,” or squirrels. Very cute.

Tomorrow’s the big day: Halloween. We have the robot costume all ready. We have tickets to the Pumpkin Path at school for the evening. And we have a half a day of babysitting from grandma (no school tomorrow).

Red Wall

No, this is not a reference to Brian Jacques novels about cute, furry animals (http://www.redwall.org/dave/jacques.html).

Red Wall is a reference to my beautiful office. My place of work and sanctuary from the household chaos that surrounds and occasionally paralyzes me. My office of clean white paint, crisp white curtains, (faux) maple desk, and polished steel fixtures. It’s not much, but it is my space during the day and I share it reluctantly with Ian at night when he works or surfs. My office has two features that I love: a beautiful, dark red wall and Marc Chagall prints.

I’m waxing poetic about a room in my house in which I sometimes feel imprisoned because I’m soon to lose this room to a new Wilson boy. Try as I might, wish as I may, I cannot expand my house to add another bedroom through my (considerable) mental or magical powers alone. I guess I haven’t learned that spell yet. We have neither the cash (don’t want the debt, thank you) nor the time to expand our home the hard way, through construction.

And so, am reluctantly facing the inevitable. Much furniture moving is in our future. Soon, I’ll be moving my office into the living room and screening or curtaining it off from the rest of the great room. (I suppose one could now say, “If only you had a wall in the middle of this vast space, you would now be able to carve out a nook for your desk and everything.” One shouldn’t say it, however.)

I’m facing a choice to paint over my glorious red wall—the one I had to beg and bargain for in the first place—or to leave it and try to make a baby’s room that embraces the red wall.

Lately, I haven’t been too keen on baby stuff—an internal rejection of the inevitable, I suppose. But with time ticking down, I realize we’d better get started. So, the decorating question of the day is, what do we do? What theme do we choose for this baby’s bedroom? Can the red wall (and the effort that would be required to cover it over) be saved?

I’ve considered the following themes, all of which could have liberal amounts of red in them: circus, jungle, farm, tropical frogs, bugs, sailboats, firetrucks, trains, and rockets/space.

I realized this past weekend, that what I really want for this baby’s room is to paint murals on the wall in the style of my favorite picture book author/illustrator, Elisa Kleven.

It’s a totally ambitious idea. I have no idea if I could really approximate anything like her work with my very limited painting experience, skills, and time. But, damn, I’d like to try. I think the first question is, how does one lazure walls with watercolors? I have two walls that I could paint murals on. (Wallpaper is the devil’s work.)

“It has been my pleasure to work with Sara Wilson over the past few years. She has demonstrated excellence in developmental and substantive editing for several long-term, extensive nursing, medical terminology, and massage therapy textbooks.
“Sara and I have worked closely during crucial book development stages; her logical and innovative suggestions for the improvement of text outlines and manuscripts have added real value to the products. Sara’s astute manuscript analysis comes with a sensitivity to and understanding of readers’ concerns, and translates into suberb pedagogy and creative solutions to jazzing up stodgy text, reaching ESL and overextended students, and producing superior textbooks. She clearly understands the process of user-centric communication design.
“Her attention to detail and vast copyediting experience have produced polished text that is ready for author and peer review. Furthermore, Sara’s diplomacy makes her an ideal editor who can meet demanding deadlines without rushing, burdening, or ruffling authors. I am delighted to be collaborating with Sara and plan to do so for many years to come.”

“Sara’s contributions have made a direct and positive impact on the success of our publishing program. She has navigated the development process of important products with skill and grace. Her unique ability to solve complex problems by crafting and applying creative ideas toward market-sensitive solutions sets her apart as a superior editorial professional. Authors and publishers are fortunate to have Sara as a key resource.”

“I’m in the unique position of having been managed by Sara Wilson when we worked at the same company and having managed her on a project she was working on for me. In both cases she was exceptionally easy to work with. Most notable is her ability to communicate clearly. Not just in explanation but also by asking penetrating questions that allow her to get to the root of any project. Her insight can illuminate issues at an early stage before they become large problems and her attention to detail generates a trust in her work that lets me relax when she’s on the job.”

“Ms. Wilson is a highly skilled and consummate professional; she has not only the ability to see the errors of grammar and syntax in writing, but also has the ability to understand the intent of the author as well. As a XXXXXXXXXX student, I have had Ms Wilson review over 1,000 pages of material on subjects including intelligence, behavior, motivation, and learning. Ms. Wilson has not only taken the time to ensure that my papers are well articulated and grammatically correct, she has also interviewed me to glean meaning and function in my writing. I have presented more than 20 papers that have been reviewed by Ms. Wilson to:
• Ph.D. professors, peers, and professionals
• Congresspersons and legal representatives
• Non-profit and research organizations
Not one paper has been rejected by these organizations when Ms. Wilson has reviewed them.”

I’m Beginning to Hate Fresno

Ian’s gone again on business for a couple of days. He left at 5:30 a.m.(?) and he’ll be back late Friday afternoon. Lucas was up at 6 thumping on the walls of his room, naked as a jaybird with the bedroom light blazing. It’s very dark still at 6 a.m these days but I suppose that will improve over the weekend when the clocks go back to standard time. I am NOT a morning person. And even more than usual, I just want to hibernate.

Quote of the Day

“What child does not feel itself perched at the center of creation? Before catechisms can instill a proper humility, small children know the truth that their own existence has caused the world to bloom into being.”

—Gregory Maguire, Mirror, Mirror

Love and Friendship Bloom in Red Rose

Lucas has been enjoying making new friends at kindergarten. He is so warm and full of love when other children are nice to him and befriend him.

Today, when we picked Lucas up from school, he said, “Did you see Devin give me a hug today? Devin is my best friend. He loves me with all his heart and I love him with all my heart.”
Ian and I responded affirmatively. “Yes, it’s wonderful to have good friends and to be a good friend,” etc., etc.
“I’m gonna marry Devin. Two boys can be married, you know. And two girls can be married, too. We’ll be married, me and Devin … and Mina. Two boys and one girl.”
“OK, Lucas,” I replied.

Later it was more of the same. “Devin and I are going to be married with Mina. And we’ll live in a house with red walls and a blue floor.”

I think the fascination with Devin is the result of several factors: (1) Devin is turning 6 on Halloween—way cool, (2) Devin invited Lucas to his pirate birthday party, (3) Devin and Lucas played together this past summer at the Bs’ preschool, so they already know each other pretty well, and (4) Devin is a really nice kid who pays attention to and plays with Lucas.

I think Devin’s pretty handsome, too.

I’m required to provide client testimonials for this new editing network I’ve joined. Theoretically these will funnel jobs my way. So, I’ve had to contact a bunch of people in the last week and ask them if they would be willing to say something nice about my work. I am simultaneously humbled by the responses I’ve recieved and ready to crow from the rooftops. So here I go…

Cock-A-Doodle-Fuckin-Do! Client Testimonials

“Thanks for doing such a terrific job copyediting XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX. I’m so glad you were able to keep track of all the types and names of the dozens of different weapons; it made my proofread so much easier. You’re so skilled and always fun to work with! I would recommend you to anyone who needs any copyediting work done. Again, thank you so much! I can’t wait to work with you again.”

“Thank you so much for the great copyedit you did on XXXXXXXXXXXXXX. That book was under such a tight deadline, and having you as the copyeditor on it made things flow much more smoothly. I worked with you before on some military sims, RPG titles, and sci-fi strategy titles, but this one was an oddball zombie action title, so I was unsure of how it would go. But it was great, and you preserved the author’s very specific tone and voice. The author loved the work you did, and the licensor gave us a ton of praise for the guide.”

“Sara Wilson has become a regular copy editor and proofreader for our magazine because we have so much confidence in her work. Her broad knowledge base and her eye for detail, combined with her flexibility and adherence to deadlines, make her an ideal freelancer for us. Plus, she has a warm personality, so we enjoy working with her.”

“I have a unique communication challenge. We are a XXXXXXXXX firm and we have to make sure that we are able to present XXXXXXXX concepts in a manner that is readable, understandable, and approachable to our customers. It this regard, Sara Wilson’s help has been indispensable. She has a discerning eye that takes my customers’ point of view into consideration. Good quality in my communications adds a credible, competitive edge to my business. And I can’t image doing business with out her.”

“Sara, thanks so much for helping to make XXXXXXXXXXXXX letter perfect (and comma, semi-colon, em-dash, etc. perfect too).”

“I’ve found Sara Wilson’s insightful queries enormously helpful in all the projects we’ve worked together on. She had a knack of keeping all the specialized terms straight and querying to ensure the author’s use of them is clear to the reader.”

“Just wanted to write you a short note and thank you again for the wonderful job you did with the XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX copyedit. I know that the project presented some logistical challenges with the amateur author and huge gaps in storyline, but you were more than up to the task of pulling it all together. I greatly appreciate your accessibility and diligence in getting the job done.”

“I’ve had the pleasure of working with Sara Wilson since 1998 and have always felt confident that my words were in safe hands, carefully pruned to arrive in print in better condition than when they left my head. Even under the stress of tight deadlines, Sara is professional, supportive, insightful, and meticulous. Her contributions are invariably thoughtful, her queries concise, and her criticisms deserved but respectful. While smart and funny aren’t mandatory traits for an editor, Sara possesses both in spades and, possibly for this reason, she deserves the highest compliment I can pay to an editor: I neither dread her calls nor fear her e-mails.”

“Just wanted to thank you for the excellent job you did on the copyedit for XXXXXXXXXXXXXX. There were so many character names and proper terms to keep track of, you made my job so much easier by keeping track of them so nicely. It was worth every penny and more! The author was so pleased with the way you cleaned up his rough text, and was grateful for your insightful queries that helped clear up some grainy issues. Thanks again!”

“I’ve worked with Sara on a wide variety of titles, from military-based XXXXXXX to pop-culture fan books, and her attention to detail has helped me complete many wonderful products. It’s always great to work with a copyeditor who is conscious of the importance of maintaining the author’s voice, but who also understands the needs of the reader.”

“I want to thank you again for all of your help over this past year. You have become an invaluable part of our public image—from writing and editing our employee training materials, marketing materials, parent support elements—even editing XXXXXXXXXX. The level of professionalism that you have brought to our printed materials, and thus to our agency, has made a measurable difference in the public perception of abilities. I can no longer imagine having a single piece of written material leave this office without it first crossing your desk. Knowing that you can do that for us takes a great deal of worry off my plate.”

“Our nonprofit organization hired Sara Wilson to copyedit a complex and lengthy handbook with a good deal of specialized language, charts, and forms. She did an excellent job not only in catching errors, but also in helping improve the readability and usability of the publication. Her work was thorough and professional, and I would definitely use her services again on future projects.”

“I have had the opportunity to work with Sara Wilson as my editor many times, beginning in 1997. As an author of 70 published books, I have worked with a number of different editors. Sara is one of the best with whom I have worked on a project. Sara always kept in close communication to provide assistance and support as needed, which was vital for completing projects with a short turnaround time. Furthermore, I was always confident that the finished product would be something I would be proud to have bear my name. I am happy to recommend Sara Wilson without any reservation.”

“Thank you for making my job easier by doing a great job on XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX. I appreciate that you did the Star Wars research to confirm the proper spelling and capitalization of each Star Wars term. I also appreciate your attention to detail—you were careful with the author’s intended meaning and queried confusing text, rather than guessing in error. In those situations, it was so helpful, however, that you provided the possible change for me, which made my job so much easier later!”

“When facing a tight deadline, as I often do, a meticulous and punctual copy editor is essential. That’s why I specifically request Sara whenever I start a new book. I’ve worked with several other editors, but Sara is by far the most thorough, carefully poring over my rough manuscripts till they’re clear, concise, and ready for publication.”

“Sara Wilson has provided copyediting and proofreading services for XXXXXXXXXXXX Corporation for several years, working on our core monthly XXXXXXXXX and the annual publications we create through our custom publishing division. She brings a balanced eye to our publications, understanding the need for us to produce the highest-quality magazines possible in the time frame we have available. With a pleasant, never-condescending manner, she marks the “right” errors, asks the “right” questions and makes the “right” suggestions, and the addition of Sara to our editorial production team has made a tremendous difference in our level of quality and the speed we’re able to move files through to the printer.”

“I recommend Sara Wilson for your copyediting needs. Having been in publishing for over thirty years and director of my own book production service for the past sixteen, I have hired and worked with dozens of freelancers. Sara offers qualities that are the most valuable—intelligence, conscientiousness, and keen attentiveness to detail. In addition to meeting or beating deadlines, her fees match the project’s budget. She is willing to make the extra effort that distinguishes her from the ordinarily competent and makes her services truly desirable.”

“Thanks for your attention to detail on XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX. Not only did you manage to keep straight the many Asian names, you managed to complete your copy edit within our hectic deadlines. Prima places unusual demands on its copy editors, so thank you for being so flexible and open to doing what we need to get the job done, and done well. Through it all, your friendly, easygoing personality made this process enjoyable. Prima made a great impression on the licensor by producing such a clean product, so thanks again!”

“For me, working with Sara allows me a certain amount of comfort. Though I’m proud of my work and own personal style, I know that once it passes through her hands, my text will come out ten times better. While working on XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX, my paramount concern was that I would get an editor who knows when to trust me and when to reign me in, one who would edit the text while preserving its unique voice. Sara was the perfect choice. She’s fast, professional, and is probably editing this as she reads it.”

“Sara Wilson has worked as a subcontracted copyeditor and proofreader for me. She has copyedited two books: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX and XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX. She has proofread five books: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX, XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX, XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX, XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX, and XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX.
“Sara has demonstrated her ability to keep track of numerous glossary terms, credit lines, references, typesetting codes, editorial styles, levels of heads, list styles, and the like. She works to maintain consistency in styles and terminology. The editorial style sheets that she has written for each job are meticulous and comprehensive. Her queries to authors are always worded very tactfully and reasonably. She is skilled at preserving the author’s voice while clarifying text to make it understandable for the reader.
“Sara has also demonstrated her ability to meet deadlines, even on short schedules. She is very good at communicating, both questioning directions that seem unclear and offering suggestions for improving text. With her proven record in subject areas such as computer software, criminology, communication theory, and history, along with her interests in sociology, religion, women’s studies, and more, Sara has displayed a versatility that makes her a valuable copyeditor or proofreader.”

“As a freelance proofreader, Sara Wilson has brought a savvy set of editing skills to our XXXXXXXXXXXX and has become a valued visiting member of our editorial team. She is thorough yet efficient, professional yet personable, makes great catches and approaches whatever tasks we throw her way with a great attitude and aplomb. As such, Sara is a true team player, eager to share her take on things without letting ego get in the way. Working with Sara is both a professional and personal pleasure.”

“Sara Wilson worked for me at XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX for six years. As an Editor and a Senior Product Manager, Sara was an asset to Prima throughout her tenure. Her organizational abilities, editorial skills, project management capabilities, and complete professionalism were keys to her success…. Typically, the most challenging projects were assigned to Sara, due to her outstanding attention to detail and her versatility in adapting her editorial style to comply with rigid and varied licensor requirements. XXXXXXXXXX continues to use Sara’s talents to our benefit by contracting with her as a freelance copyeditor.
“Sara Wilson is an excellent editor and an exceptional project manager. As a Senior Product Manager for XXXXXXXXXX, Sara managed the creative vision and production schedules for roughly 50 titles per year. Because of Sara’s communication skills, focus, and commitment to project excellence, she managed XXXXXXXXX’s high-maintenance licensing relationships. She was responsible for overseeing an in-house team of editors as well as numerous freelance authors, designers, and copyeditors.”

“I can’t tell you how many calls I received on the piece that you did. All positive, of course. I didn’t even know the piece was out until late July when several colleagues and patients commented on how much the loved the article. You really captured the essence of the importance of exercise in the community. Bravo.”

Mmmmmm Good

“Do nose goblins help you grow?” Lucas asked.
“Uh… what do you mean? When you eat them?” Ian replied.
“Yeah.”
“No. They don’t.”
“Why not? They’re salty and yummy.”

Busy Baby, Big Mama

This baby is very busy! He’s moving all the time.

Already baby’s movements in the middle of the night wake me up, and party time happens throughout the day, about every 1.5 hours. (Lucas was the same way, I think, but it’s kinda hard to remember. I do remember that the circus show inside me started at 11 p.m. sharp every night.)

Anyway, I’m getting a picture of how my relatively normal diurnal life will soon change to a 24-hour clock. Nothing about having another baby scares me more than the sleep-dep that will/may lead to intense craziness and depression. (I’d better program that hotline number into my phone now.)

When Ian puts his hand on my belly to feel baby move, more often than not, baby stops moving and hides. When Lucas speaks to the baby and holds his hand on my belly, baby bumps right up against Lucas’s little hand repeatedly. Lucas’s eyes sparkle and he laughs. “Is that weird?” he asks. “Yes, It’s very weird,” I reply. Very cute.

What’s not cute is when Lucas gets mad at me and tries to punch me in the stomach. Impulse control is still not among his many skills.

There’s a ton of well-meaning, excited mommies around me now. People I now know through Lucas’s school. I’m getting those delightful comments that I so love to hear:
“Wow, you’re really pregnant now!”
“Gee, you just popped out!”
“You’re so much bigger now!”

I know there’s no escaping getting bigger. Baby’s gotta grow and it comes with the territory. But I’d sure love to escape the running commentary. Why’s everbody gotta comment on my size?! (And I’m still fairly little right now at 24.5 weeks! It’s only gonna get worse.) Anyway, usually, the commentary then continues with a compliment, like “Your skin is so lovely,” or “You’re just glowing.” I guess that’s supposed to make up for the sizecrack (like a wisecrack–get it?).

But going back to the part about there now being other mommies and other parents in my life: that part is ultimately really good. I feel good about the people I’m getting to know through Lucas’s school and I have high hopes that they will develop into a second community for us. When I had Lucas in 2002, the only mommies I knew were the Bennett mommies (Thank the gods for the Bennett mommies!). At times, though, I was very lonely in my new life role. I think this time it will be easier in that regard.

Yesterday I Was a Good Mom

I’m feeling pretty chuffed about how today (yesterday) went.

I …

* got Lucas ready for school on time
* worked and finished two little projects
* picked Lucas up from school on time
* took him to the park, where I played and talked with him (fully present) the whole time.
* took him home, read him stories, and got him to stay in his room for an hour for “nap”
* worked some more and finished a chapter
* made homemade apple cinnamon muffins with Lucas (I was fully present); we improved the healthiness of the recipe by adding wheat germ, wheat flour, soy flour, raisins, and walnuts
* helped him count one by one the 121 items in his bag of treasures
* praised Lucas for eating so well at dinner (daddy made one of Lucas’s favorite foods: shrimp stir-fry with broccoli, carrots, and cabbage and he gobbled it down)
* did the dishes; cleaned the table
* gave Lucas his vitamins and Omega-3s
* went to a lecture on parenting the wild (I mean strong-willed) child
* laid out clothes for tomorrow (today)

And my darling hubby …
* worked all day
* came home and made a super yummy dinner
* made Lucas’s lunch for tomorrow
* played with Lucas
* showered him, got him ready, read stories and put him to bed by 7:45pm
